Building a fitness or wellness business can look inspiring from the outside.

The energy. The community. The full classes. The transformation stories.

But behind the scenes, every founder eventually has to ask:

Is this business actually built to last?

That question shaped my conversation with Julian Barnes, co-founder and CEO of the BFS Network. Julian works with growth-stage studio operators, helping them build profitable businesses without becoming the bottleneck.

One of the biggest themes we explored was how much the fitness and wellness consumer has changed. People are no longer looking for just a workout. They are thinking about recovery, sleep, nutrition, mental health, longevity, and what it means to feel well over time.

That creates an incredible opportunity for studios, but it also raises expectations.

A strong business cannot rely on great classes alone. It needs trust, consistency, retention, partnerships, systems, and leadership.

Julian shared that profitable studios stay focused on three things: finding new leads, welcoming them into the community, and giving them a reason to stay.

Simple in theory. Much harder in practice.

Because sustainable growth often requires the founder to change, too.

The transition from coach to CEO means learning to step away from every small task and focus on the work only you can do. It means developing your team, strengthening the member experience, building partnerships, and creating systems that do not depend entirely on your time or energy.

Sometimes growth is not about adding more.
Sometimes it starts with listening more closely to your members.
Sometimes it means making the experience more consistent.

And sometimes it means accepting that you cannot answer every email, manage every fire, and still lead the company into its next chapter.

This conversation is for studio owners, wellness founders, coaches, and operators thinking beyond full classes and short-term revenue.

Because the next era of fitness and wellness will not only reward the brands with the best workout.

It will reward the leaders building businesses that are profitable, sustainable, and deeply valuable to the communities they serve.
